The August Farmers Market Challenge

Want to give your body the nutrients it needs while supporting your community? Join The August Farmers Market Challenge! | The Refreshanista

I’m super excited about this challenge! I thought of it as a challenge for myself as a way to reduce processed food and increase whole, fresh produce in my diet- but I realized we all could use a little more fresh, local food in our lives πŸ™‚

Eating local is very important- it supports people in your own community and you are able to meet the farmers who have grown your food! That trusting connection is something you just can’t find when you throw a box of mac and cheese into your basket at the supermarket. You get fresh, healthy food and they can support their family- it’s a win-win!Want to give your body the nutrients it needs while supporting your community? Join The August Farmers Market Challenge!

It’s very easy to rely on processed food because it’s quick and easy. I find myself resorting to boxed food when I’m stressed and short on time- but the junky food only makes me feel worse! Don’t give your body junk when it really wants simple, nutritious food. If you think about it, a fresh, juicy nectarine is just as quick and easy as a bag of chips!

Summer is the perfect time to start frequenting your local farmers market a little more regularly. Fresh produce is abundant this time of year, and our bodies crave fresh, nutritious food.

The details:

For the month of August, buy all of your food from your local markets

  • Rework your typical menus to centre around in-season produce- you may have to look online to see what fruits and veggies are in season and make a trip to your market to check out what’s available before creating your meal plan.
  • If your local farmers market does not have staples like bread or eggs for example- go to local bakeries or make your own bread. Look for eggs that were produced close to you or find ways to live without them for a month πŸ™‚ it’s easier than you think!
  • Exceptions: cooking & baking staples like flour, sugar, spices, herbs, and cooking oil. Tea and coffee- although locally blended and roasted tea and coffee is best!
  • Remember the goals: supporting your community and eating nutritious fresh food. It’s a challenge if you are in the habit of supermarket shopping but it is meant to be enjoyable and fulfilling πŸ™‚

  1. What a great idea! I try to incorporate as much goodness as possible from the farmers’ markets here in Vancouver, but there are also tons of fresh markets along Commercial Drive & East Hastings that stock local, organic produce, too. I’m pretty lucky.

  2. I love this idea. Ironically, I’m surrounded by farms living in the mountains, but it is a very long drive to a market! I do trade certain food items quite a bit with locals though.
