Honey Garlic Tofu Bowl

Honey Garlic Tofu Bowl- this warming bowl of honey garlic baked tofu, sesame broccoli, and brown rice is a delicious and healthy meal! | The Refreshanista

Hello hello! What a long week, right?! It’s finally Saturday and I’m very happy to have the weekend to recover from a jam-packed schedule. University is just exhausting this time of year- I have 3 final essays Β due on Tuesday! Like I’ve mentioned before, one of my favourite things to do when I’m stressed out is cook. It’s very therapeutic for me, just focusing on the food πŸ™‚

I’m excited to share this recipe! If you’ve been to any Chinese restaurant, you’ve probably noticed they have honey garlic chicken, but no tofu equivalent. My fiancΓ©, who isn’t vegetarian, loves to order it. The sauce has always smelled so good to me so I decided to give a tofu version a try πŸ™‚

Turns out it’s crazy delicious! I could eat the honey garlic baked tofu on its own. It’s that good. The sauce is sticky and subtly sweet and full of flavour. And baking the tofu after marinating it in the sauce really soaks in the flavour. Yum.

I made sure to press my block of tofu before marinating it. You’ll want to be sure not to skip this step. It helps get the excess water out, allowing the tofu to suck up more sauce πŸ™‚

If you’ve never tried tofu, this is a great way to try it. Tofu on its own can be pretty bland. The key is to soak it in a flavourful sauce. The tofu absorbs it easily and becomes deeeelicious.

I also decided to sautee the broccoli in sesame oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds. This adds a lot of flavour without being overpowering. The sesame flavour pairs really well with the sweet honey garlic tofu. Totally delish πŸ™‚

This meal is really simple to make, probably quicker than waiting for Chinese delivery! And of course it’s made from all-natural whole ingredients. Sometimes I worry about how many ingredients are in those sauces from the restaurants! This sauce is only three πŸ™‚

Honey Garlic Tofu Bowl

Yield: 4 bowls

Ingredients

  • 1 block of medium-firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup of honey
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 heads of broccoli, chopped into bite-size florets
  • 2 tablespoons of sesame oil
  • sesame seeds
  • 3 green onions, chopped for garnish
  • 4 servings of brown rice, cooked to package instructions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Meanwhile, press your block of tofu, either using a tofu press, or by placing the block wrapped in paper towel between two plates with something heavy on top. Press for 15 minutes.
  2. Cut tofu into small rectangular pieces.
  3. In a small bowl, stir together soy sauce, honey, and garlic until well combined.
  4. Place tofu in a large ziploc bag. Pour in the sauce mixture, seal, and shake a bit to coat the tofu. Leave on the counter to marinate for 15 minutes.
  5. Then, place tofu pieces on a baking sheet in a single layer. Do not discard marinade, it is delicious to pour over the finished dish. Bake tofu for 15 minutes. Flip each piece, then bake for another 10 minutes.
  6. While the tofu is baking, heat sesame oil in a frying pan over high heat. Add broccoli and cook, stirring frequently for 5-10 minutes, until lightly browned. Remove from heat, sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  7. To serve, place a serving of rice in a bowl, top with broccoli and a few pieces of tofu. Sprinkle some chopped green onion on top and drizzle with leftover sauce.
