5 Tricks to Cure Your Cold Naturally- It's cold season! Ditch the cough syrup and try these 5 tricks to cure your cold naturally.| The RefreshanistaCold season is coming! As the weather gets chilly, it seems like everyone we know is getting a cold and we are just waiting for it to hit us. Especially if you have kids or work with kids! Growing up, I had much younger siblings (a brother 12 years younger and sister 15 years younger) and they were constantly sniffling and coughing during the winter months. I kept some of these tricks up my sleeve and rarely got sick πŸ™‚

Forget nasty “cherry” flavour cough syrup. There are more natural, less yucky ways to soothe your sore throat and kick your cough.

  1. Lemon & Ginger “Tea”: this is one of my favourites! It is the perfect warming beverage to sip when you have a sore throat. Simply pour a cup of boiling water over 2 slices of lemon and 3 slices of fresh ginger root. Add a teaspoon of honey for extra healing and a touch of sweetness. All of these ingredients have healing, antibacterial properties. And hot liquids are very soothing for sore throats πŸ™‚
  2. Turmeric Milk: turmeric is best known for its presence in curry spice but it’s a fantastic natural anti-inflammatory. I recently did a research review about this spice for a botany class, tons of evidence shows that turmeric calms inflammation and tummy troubles, so this remedy is also great for the stomach flu.   3. Cinnamon: when I’m sick I sprinkle cinnamon on everything. This spice is known for boosting your immune system and is used in Ayurvedic medicine to heal colds. Try drinking chai tea (not the sugar-filled latte kind πŸ˜‰ ) or sprinkling cinnamon on toast with peanut or almond butter. My favourite way to up my cinnamon intake is whole wheat toast with almond butter, sliced banana, and a generous sprinkle ofΒ cinnamon. FYI: most cinnamon at the grocery store is Cassia cinnamon which is of lower quality and does not have the healing properties as Ceylon cinnamon (true cinnamon).
  4. Neti pot: if you use one of these already, you probably love it! If you haven’t used one, it probably seems weird. It takes a little getting used to, but pouring salted water through one nostril and out the other really gets all your congestion out.   5. Hydration: when you’re sick, most people will remind you to keep hydrated. Well, they’re right! Keeping hydrated can help loosen congestion, making it easier to get rid of. Nothing worse than being stuffed up and getting zero relief when you try to blow your nose! So drink lots of fluids πŸ™‚ Stay away from caffeinated beverages, as the caffeine will actually dehydrate you.

  2. I had no idea cinnamon could prevent colds! I read somewhere that it was good for your digestive system and gut flora, which I suppose has an effect on your immune system. It’s crazy how things like that relate to each other. I’m a true believe that what you put into your body you get out of it that’s for sure!

  3. I’m just now getting over my dreaded cold but I’ll definitely keep these in mind for next time. I’ve never used a Neti Pot before but I’ve heard nothing, but great things about them!
