5 Key Health Benefits of Pumpkin

5 Key Health Benefits of Pumpkin- Fall means we are surrounded by pumpkin-flavoured everything! Here's why you should incorporate more {real} pumpkin into your diet.| The Refreshanista

Can you believe it’s already October?! It seems like fall is going by crazy fast. This weekend is already Canadian Thanksgiving 🙂 October brings with it pumpkin-flavoured everything. Pumpkin Spice Lattes- affectionately dubbed The PSL, pumpkin pie, pumpkin Oreos, pumpkin donuts, etc. It seems like every brand and store rolls out a pumpkin-something this time of year.

And pumpkin-flavoured everything is delicious, don’t get me wrong. But real pumpkin has so many health benefits. And I personally think food tastes better when it’s made with the real deal opposed to overly-sweet pumpkin “flavour”. So look at the ingredients first before buying something pumpkin-flavoured, look for real pumpkin toward the top of the list- that means there’s a good amount of it in there!

Here are some reasons you should eat more pumpkin:

  1. It’s full of Vitamin A. Which means it’s great for your vision! I like to joke that my vision is so bad because I hated carrots, which are full of Vitamin A, as a kid. So keep your eyes healthy by getting more Vitamin A!
  2. Not only is Vitamin A great for your eyes, it is also amazing for your skin. Some people notice that their complexion is “glowy” when they take in more Vitamin A. Who doesn’t want a glowy complexion?
  3. It also has a good amount of Vitamin C. This vitamin helps keep your immune system in good working order. Very important during these colder months when sickness seems to be constantly spreading.
  4. Don’t forget the seeds! They contain high amounts of protein and fibre, making them a great food to keep you full. Eat a handful of trail mix with the seeds as a snack or top your cereal or oatmeal with them in the morning to help tide you over until lunch.
  5. The seeds can even boost your mood 🙂 they contain the amino acid tryptophan which is needed to produce serotonin which brightens your mood.

So this season, add more {real} pumpkin to your diet and feel great 🙂
